This contains the supplementary catalogue of acquisitions May 1845-May 1846 and the annual report of May 1846 for the South African Public Library . 1846 is a notable year in the history of the SAPL for two reasons. Firstly, the library’s librarian of 22 years standing, Alexander Johnstone Jardine, passed away in 1845 and was replaced by former assistant librarian Fredrick Maskew. Secondly, the committee note that the library building is becoming inadequate to the size of the library’s rapidly expanding collection. The catalogue alphabetically is organised by title, author and number of volumes. There is no effort to divide it by subject.
In 1845-6 396 volumes were acquired by the library, and the breakdown by subject is as follows. Miscellaneous theology (23 volumes); political economy, jurisprudence and economy (14 volumes); natural history and agricultural science (13 volumes); belles lettres and criticism (60 volumes); arts and sciences (16 volumes); biography (28 volumes); history (50 volumes); voyages and travels (45 volumes); works of amusement (118 volumes) and miscellaneous (24 volumes). Works of amusement are listed by title only, except where the author is well known. The named authors in the 1846 catalogue are James Fennimore Cooper, Captain Fredrick Marryat, Frances Trollope, Horace Smith, Eugène Sue, Catherine Gore, Charles Whitehead and James Lever. Leigh Hunt’s Stories from the Italian Poets is also listed.
