This 1857 supplementary catalogue of new acquisitions to the South African Public Library was compiled by the librarian Fredrick Maskew and printed by Saul Solomon, Cape Town. It is appended to a transcription of speeches given at the annual meeting of subscribers in 1857. The library acquired 464 new volumes during the 12 months preceding May 1857, including 200 volumes in quarto of all the patents produced in Great Britain from the earliest record until 1857, presented to the library by Gvr. Sir. George Grey (1812-1898). The breakdown by class of the other volumes acquired is as follows. Theology (9); jurisprudence, government and economics (7); science and the arts (8); works of amusement (63); belles lettres (58); history (32); voyages and travels (48); biography (30) and miscellaneous (9). Notable acquisitions include the Works of Edgar Allan Poe and Elizabeth Barrett Browning’s Aurora Leigh .
