This 1848 supplement detailing the acquisitions to the South African Public Library in the 12 months proceeding 29 April 1848 was published in Cape Town by Saul Solomon and compiled by the SAPL librarian Fredrick Maskew. The works are listed by title, author and number of volumes. Proceeding the catalogue is a transcript of speeches made at the 19th meeting of subscribers. A total of 234 volumes was added to the library’s collection and the breakdown by subject is as follows. Theology and divinity (5 volumes); political economy, jurisprudence and economy (7 volumes); natural history (5 volumes); belles lettres (60 volumes); science and arts (9 volumes) biography (23 volumes); history (33 volumes); voyages and travels (27 volumes); works of amusement (52 volumes) and miscellaneous (16 volumes). Notable additions include part 26 of Dr. Andrew Smith’s Zoology in South Africa and a copy of Beaumont and Fletcher’s Poetical Works . New novels by Catherine Gore, Fredrick Marryat, Frances Trollope and James Fennimore Cooper are listed as well as Benjamin Disraeli’s Tancred .
