This manuscript catalogue is of the library of Rev. Andreas Kolver, pastor of the Lutheran Church in Cape Town. Kolver, a native of Rotterdam in the Netherlands, arrived in Cape Town in 1779 to commence his ministry after the Dutch Reform Church’s monopoly on religious worship at the Cape was lifted by the Dutch East India Company. He served as minister of Cape Town’s Lutheran Church until his death in 1797.
The 1,858 title collection is organised by size (folio, quarto, octavo, duodecimo and sedecimo). There is an appendix to the catalogue of a further 113 titles also organised by size. The main catalogue is dated early July 1797, and the appendix October 1797. Kolver’s library consists of a rare collection of bibles, homilies, psalters, philosophical works and scriptural exegeses dating mostly from the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, with a number dating from the sixteenth century. The works are mostly in either Dutch or Latin, with some German works also present. There are no titles in either English or French. The places of publication listed are all key centres of the Protestant book trade in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries in Germany and the Netherlands. The largest number are printed in Amsterdam, followed by Lipzeg, Frankfurt, Leiden and Utrecht.
