This is a catalogue for a public sale of books by the auctioneer J.C. Martin. This catalogue of 173 titles is an eclectic mix of voyages and travels, histories, biography, popular tales and romances and a small selection of educational books. These include Dutch translations of popular travelogues, romances and tales originally written in German, French, English and Spanish. The most frequently listed author is French fabulist Jean de La Fontaine (10 titles). This collection is also notable for having Dutch translations of a number of popular German romance writers including Christian Henrich Spiess (4 titles), ‘Friedrich Laun’ (3 titles) and ‘Heinrich Clauren’ (5 titles). The collection also includes a Dutch translation of Don Quixote.
There are a small number of Dutch translations of English works across a number of genres. These are William Paley’s Natural theology and the travel writings of Mungo Park and James Bruce.
