This 1836 catalogue is the fourth known printed catalogue of the Australian Subscription Library, and the second produced by Sydney printer William Jones, following the 1834 catalogue. The only preliminaries included here are lists of the office holders and subscribers of the library, and in this copy these lists have been heavily annotated; it appears likely that the annotations reflect subsequent changes in the membership after the printing of the catalogue.
The catalogue itself is a basic list, organised haphazardly by author, title, and occasionally subject (as in the case of ‘Voyages’). As basic as it is, the catalogue subtly reflected the emphasis on fiction in the collection of the Australian Subscription Library in the 1830s. As in the 1834 catalogue, the works of Sir Walter Scott are typographically emphasised within their own separate section. In this catalogue there are also separate sections for significant new collections of fiction—Anna Laetitita Barbauld’s 50-volume British Novelists series (1810) and Leith Ritchie’s Library of Romance (15 volumes, 1833-35).
