The second catalogue of books sent by Guillaume to the Melbourne Public Library in 1857, this catalogue consists of over 800 volumes arranged alphabetically by author and title. A with previous Guillaume catalogues, it contains a high-level of bibliographic detail and this copy, held by the State Library of Victoria, includes annotations which suggests the books being ticked off as they are unpacked and features corrections to the catalogue records and remarks such as: ‘not sent’, ‘old edition’ etc. The catalogue also includes a page of handwritten additions attached to the back of the catalogue.
This catalogue contains a variety of genres in fairly equal proportions: theology, science, history, travel narratives and literature. It includes several series by text publication societies and cabinet libraries, including the Edinburgh Cabinet Library (38 volumes), the Hakluyt Society (20 volumes) and the Sydenham Society (36 volumes). The catalogue features a number of theological works by John Henry Newman (20 volumes) and Augustus Neander (13 volumes). The bibliographic detail included in the catalogue is evident in the record of Bunyan’s Pilgrim’s Progress which notes the edition contains ‘India proofs’. History is also well-represented by authors such as William Prescott (9 volumes), Barthold Niebuhr (11 volumes) and Thomas Carlyle (13 volumes). The selection of scientific works features 18 volumes by the botanist Joseph Dalton Hooker and there also several works concerned with the medical sciences. This catalogue features a number of literary authors, including Coleridge (7 volumes), Dante (12 volumes), Goethe (4 volumes), Washington Irving (29 volumes), Longfellow (4 volumes) and 7 volumes by the art critic and historian John Ruskin. Several political economists also appear, including David Ricardo, J. S. Mill and Nassau Senior.
