This catalogue, the third sent by Guillaume in 1857, contains approximately 660 volumes arranged alphabetically by author and title, and includes detailed bibliographic information about the year, place and format of publication. This copy, which is held by the State Library of Victoria, includes annotations and has several corrections, including the comment ‘not ordered’ and ‘rejected’ next to 16 volumes by Thomas Hobbes.
Imaginative literature forms almost a third of the entire catalogue, with works by Dickens (25 volumes), Hazlitt (16 volumes), De Quincey (5 volumes) and 7 volumes of the prose works of John Milton. Works of poetry include Robert Browning, Thomas Hood and Joanna Baillie. Other notable inclusions by women writers are 42 volumes of Elizabeth Inchbald’s work and 27 volumes of works by the English art historian Mrs. Jameson (Anna Brownell Jameson). History and travel narratives also feature in this catalogue, including 23 volumes by William Coxe. While most of the works in this catalogue are in English and published in London, there are some notable foreign language works: 22 volumes of works by the Italian dramatist and poet Vittorio Alfieri, recorded as a ‘large and fine paper copy’ and published in Pisa, and 21 volumes of works by the Spanish playwright, Félix Lope de Vega y Carpio, published in Madrid and recorded as a ‘large paper copy’. An additional significant title, listed as ‘privately printed’ in Allahabad, is The Life of Mohammad translated by the Austrian orientalist Aloys Sprenger.
