This is the first catalogue sent by Frederick Guillaume to the Melbourne Public Library in 1859. This catalogue is arranged alphabetically by author and title, and as with previous Guillaume catalogues, contains detailed bibliographic information including the year, place and format of publication.
Comprising approximately 1000 volumes, this catalogue contains numerous French and Latin titles in addition to the English-language books that form the majority of the collection. There are hundreds of volumes from French-language annals including 85 volumes of Annales des ponts et chaussées and 109 volumes of Annales maritimes et colonials . The catalogue is dominated by military history, philology, travel and ethnographic works. It contains several works concerning India, such as 30 volumes of the Calcutta Review, and philological works by the British missionary William Carey published in Serampore. The travel works include a 25-volume set of The Traveller’s Library published by Longman, Brown and Co. Few literary works are contained in this catalogue with Richardson (19 volumes) and Shakespeare (6 volumes) a couple of the exceptions. Other titles of interest in this catalogue are: 50 volumes of the Bohn Corpus, Byzantine historiæ corpus scriptorium , and Henry Mayhew’s London labour and the London poor which is listed as ‘never completed – suppressed’ indicating the descriptive bibliographic detail provided in the catalogue.
