This catalogue is the second catalogue sent by the Melbourne Public Library’s London supplier, J. J. Guillaume, in 1858. Consisting of approximately 1000 volumes it is arranged alphabetically by author and title, and as with other Guillaume catalogues, contains detailed bibliographic information.
This catalogue contains books in English and other languages including many in French, such as 130 volumes of Annales des Sciences Naturelles, and 28 volumes of Bulletin de la Sociéte Géologique de France, and several in Latin, such as J. Torelli’s edition of the works of Archimedes published in Oxford in 1792. This catalogue consists of numerous genres, including agriculture, art, architecture, ethnography, grammar and philology, and history. The majority of works are concerned with science, especially botany, chemistry, geology, and the catalogue includes 55 volumes of the Magazine of Natural History. Several works on military and naval history and nautical information also feature. The catalogue contains numerous volumes from text publication societies, including the Cavendish Society (20 volumes) and the Chetham Society (32 volumes). These publications would allow the Library to build their book collection quickly. Also featured are works by popular ethnologists of the period James Prichard and Robert Knox. Other notable inclusions are 12 volumes of Viscount Castlereagh’s memoirs and Lady Charlotte Guest’s translation of the manuscript of Welsh legends, the Mabinogion.
