This catalogue is the first catalogue sent by J. J. Guillaume to the Melbourne Public Library in 1858 and consists of almost 800 volumes. As with previous Guillaume catalogues for the Library, it is arranged alphabetically by author and title and contains detailed bibliographic information, including date, place and format of publication.
This catalogue contains numerous periodicals, many of which comprise volumes from the years 1857 and 1858, demonstrating the Library’s effort to stay current. Periodicals listed include: The Athenaeum Journal, Blackwood’s Edinburgh Magazine, Edinburgh Review, and 65 volumes of The Mechanics’ Magazine. The transactions from various societies of arts and sciences are also featured, such as the Linnean Society of London (21 volumes), the Royal Irish Academy (23 volumes), and the Society of Arts (58 volumes). The majority of this catalogue consists of scientific works, particularly those concerned with geology, paleontology and biology. The catalogue contains works by P. B. Brodie, Charles Darwin, Charles Lyell Gideon Mantell and includes 40 volumes of The Naturalist’s Library edited by William Jardine. While most of the titles are in English and published in London, there are some works in foreign languages, such as 33 volumes of the Italian poet Torquato Tasso published in Pisa.
