The second catalogue sent to the Melbourne Public Library by Frederick Guillaume in 1860, this catalogue contains approximately 1200 volumes and is arranged alphabetically by author and title. As with previous Guillaume catalogues, this catalogue contains detailed bibliographic information, such as the date, place and format of publication.
History, travel and ethnographic works dominate this catalogue, with works on Africa, India, and Japan. The catalogue is notable for the number of women writers it features across various genres, such as: Madame De La Barc, Mrs Bray, Mrs Grant, Mrs Hervey, Lady Morgan, Lady Sheil, and Mary Somerville. The catalogue also contains 11 volumes of Charlotte Brontë’s works and her biography written by Gaskell. Other significant literary works are: Barbauld’s biography written by Lucy Aikin, and 9 volumes by the Shakespearean scholar James Halliwell-Phillips. Chatterton, Chaucer, Donne, De Quincey, Milton, Spencer and Shelley also appear, and the catalogue lists a ‘reprint of the first folio, 1623’ as one of the editions of Shakespeare included. As with earlier Guillaume catalogues sent to the Melbourne Public Library this catalogue contains several works in French and also features series by text publication societies, such as 153 volumes of the Bannatyne Club and 15 volumes by the Caxton Club.
