This 1857 catalogue consists of foreign language books sent by the Melbourne Public Library’s London supplier, J. J. Guillaume, and appears to repeat several of the foreign-language titles included in the earlier ‘portions’ of the 1857 catalogues.
Arranged alphabetically by author and title, this catalogue contains almost 400 volumes, the majority of which are in French and published in Paris. As with previous Guillaume catalogues, this catalogue contains significant bibliographic details and this copy from the State Library of Victoria includes annotations. Notable works featured in this catalogue include: 22 volumes of the Austrian artist Adam Bartsch, published in French in Vienna and recorded as ‘fine paper’ copies; 9 volumes of the philologist and orientalist Jean-François Champollion’s works; and 16 volumes of the Italian poet Pietro Metastasio. Philosophical works also appear in this catalogue with works by Denis Diderot, Jacques Rousseau and Victor Cousins.
