This catalogue is the first order sent by Frederick Guillaume to the Melbourne Public Library in 1860 and consists of approximately 1300 volumes arranged alphabetically by author and title. As with previous Guillaume catalogues, this catalogue contains detailed bibliographic information, such as the date, place and format of publication, and the copy held by the State Library of Victorian includes annotations suggestive of books being ticked off as they are unpacked. The annotations also include corrections to the catalogue where certain titles listed were not sent, and additions where titles and volumes have not been listed on the catalogue. A handwritten page titled ‘Books sent (not inserted)’ is attached to the back of the catalogue.
While the majority of works contained in the catalogue are in English and published in London, there are foreign-language books in French, German and Italian, such as 229 volumes of the Annales de chimie et physique published in Paris from 1789-1859, 130 volumes of Revue des deux Mondes, and work by the German geologist H. G. Bronn. Science works dominate the catalogue with a focus on chemistry, geology and medicine. The catalogue includes work by Baron Cuvier (in French), 85 volumes of the Edinburgh Medical and Surgical Journal and 76 volumes of The Lancet. The catalogue also contains 25 volumes of various titles in the Handbook for Travellers published by John Murray. Other notable titles in the catalogue are: 210 volumes of the Gentleman’s Magazine from its first publication in 1731 until 1858, and 13 volumes of The Zoist, a British journal concerning mesmerism. Significantly, there are no English-language literary works contained in this catalogue.
