Printed by Saul Solomon, Cape Town in 1847 this supplement covers the acquisitions of the South African Public Library from May 1 1846-April 1 1847 and is compiled by the SAPL librarian Fredrick Maskew. The works are listed by title, author and number of volumes. A total of 240 volumes were added to the library’s collection and the breakdown by subject is as follows. Belles lettres and criticism (11); history (31); biography (28); voyages and travels (34); works of amusement (81); natural history and agriculture (2); medicine (3); arts and sciences (12); poetry and drama (1); miscellaneous (8); theology (4); politics jurisprudence and economy (25). As always, the library’s acquisitions are dominated by voyages and travels, histories and works of amusement. Notable acquisitions in 1846-7 include Charles Darwin’s Geology of South America and Thomas Carlyle’s History of the French Revolution . In terms of novels, new releases by Catherine Gore, James Fennimore Cooper, GPR James and Charles Dickens are listed.
