This catalogue of the additions to the collection of the Australian Subscription Library was the second Addenda to the major catalogue published in 1839, An Arranged Catalogue of the Books in the Australian Subscription Library and Reading Room. Printed in Sydney by Kent and Fairfax, printers of the Sydney Morning Herald, the preliminaries to the catalogue include a financial statement for the year 1840, and a list of new subscribers to the library.
The catalogue lists 487 new titles added to the library since the previous Addenda, a substantial increase on the previous year. Significant acquisitions were made in the categories of Biography and History (110 titles), Works of Fiction (90 titles), Geography, Voyages and Travels (59 titles), and Jurisprudence (51 titles). The other new acquisitions were in the categories of Miscellaneous (29 titles), Theology (27 titles), Poetry and the Drama (24 titles), Moral Philosophy (13 titles), Political Economy and Commerce (13 titles), Antiquities (12 titles), Mechanical Arts (10 titles), Periodicals (10 titles), Natural History (9 titles), Philology (7 titles), Mathematics, Astronomy, etc (5 titles), Classics (5 titles), Medicine, Anatomy and Surgery (5 titles), Natural Philosophy and Chemistry (4 titles), and Agriculture (4 titles).
